You have rolled your hamstrings before and given up, because it hurt in a way that felt pointless. That is usually the roller, not you. A solid block of dense foam applies one pressure everywhere — and on a muscle that is already guarding, one hard pressure is the fastest way to make the muscle guard harder.
The GRID is built the other way round. It is a hollow rigid core wrapped in EVA foam moulded into three different surfaces: flat sections, narrow ridges and wider bars. You change the pressure by changing which part of the roller you are on, not by gritting your teeth.
What it is, precisely
- 13″ long, 5.5″ diameter — short enough to keep in a tote or a suitcase, long enough to cover a hamstring or a quad without hunting.
- Hollow ABS core. It does not compress under body weight and it does not break down into a soft sausage after a year, which is the usual death of a cheap roller.
- Multi-density EVA surface. Flat for broad pressure, ridged for narrower pressure, bars for the most targeted.
- Weight limit 500 lb, and it is light to carry at about 1.2 lb.
Which means, on the floor
You can start on the flat sections for a hamstring that has not been touched in a year, then rotate onto the ridges as the muscle settles. Trying to do that with a solid high-density roller means buying a second, softer roller.
The hollow core also does something unglamorous and useful: it stores your resistance band, and it does not deform when you pack a bag on top of it.
When the cheap one is the better buy — and it often is
If you mostly want a long roller to lie along your spine for thoracic extension, a plain 24″ high-density roller does that job better than a 13″ GRID, because it supports your whole back at once, and it costs roughly $17 rather than $28.
Buy the GRID for limbs: hamstrings, quads, calves, glutes, IT band. Buy a long plain roller for the spine. If you only ever buy one and your problem is a desk-stiff upper back, buy the long cheap one and put the difference towards a mat.
What Amazon shoppers report
On 18 September 2026 the Amazon listing showed 4.7 out of 5 from about 23,600 ratings, marked “#1 Top Rated” in foam rollers, with 9,000+ bought in the past month at $27.99. Those are Amazon’s numbers as displayed on that date, not ours — prices and counts move daily, so check the listing.
Honest limits
- It is firm. First-timers with very tender hamstrings should start against a wall standing up, not on the floor with full body weight.
- 13″ is short for spinal work. Covered above; do not expect it to replace a long roller.
- It is not a massage gun. Rolling is slow, broad pressure. If you want pinpoint percussion, this is the wrong tool.
How to actually use it (three minutes, not twenty)
Roll slowly — about an inch per second. When you find a spot that complains, stop there and breathe out for three slow breaths rather than rolling back and forth over it. Ninety seconds per leg is plenty. Rolling is a doorway into stretching, not a substitute: do your hamstring holds afterwards, when the tissue has stopped guarding.
